Governor Dannel P. Malloy has appointed Clare H. Barnett to chair the State Teachers’ Retirement Board (STRB). Barnett has been a member of the STRB for the past 18 years and prior to that she was a member of the State Treasurers’ Investment Advisory Council. The STRB administers and provides pension benefits to retired teachers, offering easily accessible, timely and accurate information and services.
Barnett was a social studies teacher, department chair, and district K-12 coordinator in the Danbury Public Schools before retiring in 2008. She is a member of the CEA Retirement Commission, and on the national level, she serves on the Trustee Education and Nominating Committees of the National Council on Teacher Retirement (NCTR). She was president of the National Council on Teacher Retirement, only the second teacher trustee president in the history of that body.
Each year Barnett speaks to active and/or retired teachers on a variety of topics, including, preserving the defined benefit plan, challenges and changes to benefits, health care issues, and the latest on teacher pensions.
NEA-Retired Vice-President John Jensen, who served with Barnett on the National Council on Teacher Retirement, says Barnett is a true professional, “Clare’s term as president of the NCTR was fabulous. Clare never faltered. She excelled and set an example for all to see. Connecticut is fortunate to have her.”
